Mrs King, of 66 Bridge Gate, Derby, who has two sons in the 3rd Battalion King's Royal Rifles, now stationed in Delhi, has received letters from them containing interesting accounts of the attempted assassination of Lord Hardinge on the occasion of his state entry into Delhi.

"The state procession was moving through the main street of Delhi on its way to the fort before making the proclamation of the new capital being opened and, just as the viceroy's bodyguard of native princes passed where I was standing, I heard two 'hurrahs'.
"It seemed as if it was God's will that the viceroy should not be killed for, as the elephant took one step forward, so the bomb passed behind the viceroy and struck the native behind.
"The elephant stopped and I saw that it had blown the poor native to pieces.
"It had not gone far, though, when he fainted from shock and loss of blood and they took him off the elephant and found that a fragment of the bomb had struck his shoulder and laid it open.

Bugler King [George] writes January 2, 1913: "Dear Mother, I expect you will have heard of the attempt to kill the Viceroy of India and of some of our chaps getting hit with fragments of the bomb.
"Dear mother, a lot of our chaps picked up pieces of the wrecked car as curios but I was too much upset to think about it. Anyway, I was lucky not to get hit as the chap next but one to me got his helmet cut with a part of the bomb.
"The viceroy at first did not appear to be hurt, for he turned an inquiring look round at the house where it was thrown from and, recollecting his wife behind him, seemed to me to be asking if she was hurt.

"He was operated on the same night and they took nails and bits of iron out of his shoulder.
"It seems a marvellous thing that there were two native bearers sitting behind their excellencies and only one got killed and the other slightly wounded.
