fi nally received what he had been working towards for three decades, a PhD in Biology. Alumni aff airs have indicated they believe it may well be a record for Queen's: the longest continuous time as a student in the 170 years of the university's history. Receiving his PhD at Grant Hall was the perfect end to his education at the university. "No building represents Queen's to me more than Grant Hall with its famous clock tower being the very symbol of the university," Samis commented. "Th irty years and two months ago I strode into the 'Tindall Field Games' to begin my fi rst Frosh week, and my academic career at Queen's," Samis wrote to his family on the Nike Lebron Zoom Soldier 6

day he received his PhD. "It was fitting that on this sunny warm November day it was Grant Hall that was the venue for convocation," he said, as Grant Hall is where it all began in 1982, when he gathered with a thousand other frosh that first night at Queen's. Samis, now assistant professor at the Department of Surgery at Queen's, began his studies as an undergrad in September of 1982 in the Department of Biology after being inspired by a friend's father who was a biology professor. Th is led him down a path that saw him completing a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1986 and a Masters in Biology in 1989. It was when he went on to do his master's, with a thesis in aquatic toxicology, that he decided to act on a thought he had been bouncing around in the back of his mind since he was a child. He wanted to become a doctor. More specifically, he wanted to become a surgeon. "As I wrapped up my master's I started planning to do the PhD in biology and took additional undergraduate courses to prepare," he explained. "As that was coming to an end my proposed supervisor took a position out of town. I Nike Metcon 3 Black

took that as a sign to go into another fi eld instead." Putting his PhD on hold while he attended Queen's Medical School, Samis completed fellowships in general surgery and intensive care. During his second fellowship, he found he was missing the research side of things, so when he began his critical care fellowship, he also reapplied to do his PhD in biology his thesis focused on problems he saw in the Intensive Care Unit. Through marrying and building a family, becoming a doctor and major house renovations, Samis said he managed to finish his thesis partially in thanks to the laundry room. "Many nights were spent writing at a small desk I managed to put beside the washer and dryer during the renovations. I wrote a lot of my thesis among clothes waiting to dry," he joked. "Evenings and weekends I would cram into the laundry room and little by little, I got it done." Samis also managed to graduate without generating a significant amount of debt. A few years back, he retired as a soldier in the reserve army at Princess of Wales' Own Regiment. It was with this part time job from 1982 through 1995, in addition to income associated with residency, his part time income as a doctor and the support of his wife, that Samis managed to continue his education for so many years. Samis said ending three decades of being a student is a little surreal. "It feels really odd, I've had a Queen's student card in my wallet since 1982." He said now the focus is on his practice at KGH in Critical Care, and with a Belleville practice as a surgeon where he is staff intensivist and Physician Stroke Champion at Quinte Health Care. However, he did say that he would most likely return to Queen's as a student again when he Nike Zoom Winflo 3 Review retires. Samis chalks his long status as a student to a simple, yet insatiable desire to learn. "It's just a wonderful way to acquire knowledge," Samis said fondly of the education system at Queen's. "Education is incredible because they, for the most part, provide you with the information. You don't have to go out and research it. What you pay for in your tuition is for them to pre research for you and to present you with the information to learn." "I took so many interesting courses," Samis said. "When I retire, I'll probably go back. After 30 years in the science fi eld, I'd love to go back and learn more about the arts and history and English," he said. "What a wonderful town we live in that such educational opportunities are available."
